(Affordable Care Act) Can my husband be on their insurance still?

My husband and I were married on June 1st, 2010. An emergency came up in March 2011 in which he had to go to ER, his parents gave him his insurance card and brought him home (he didn't drive at that time). A few weeks later, we received a bill from the emergency room doctor and from the department itself. His parents came over and took the bills and called insurance and they said that they would get the bills and send them to insurance and to call them if we received anymore. My question is, we were married before the bill went into effect (I was sure it was passed on Sept 23rd, 2010) can he still be on their insurance even though we were married before it was passed? He is 23 years old and every time I ask his parents they continue to say it doesn't matter we are married. Not answering the question whether it matters about the date. A friend of mine was able to stay on her parent's insurance when she got married May, 24th, 2011. Could someone please give me some insight?

The Affordable Care Act was actually signed into law on March 23, 2010. The provision allowing adult children to retain coverage under a parent’s plan until age 26 came into effect on September 23, 2010. But the good news is that the date of your marriage, in this case, is irrelevant. Even if you had already been married for a year before the ACA, your husband’s parents would probably still have been able to add him back onto their health insurance policy.

If you’re concerned about the bills, contact the hospital ER and the doctor’s billing office to confirm that they have been processed and paid.

What is the affordable Health care Act?

Allegedly it's supposed to make health care affordable and available but it's doing the opposite! Obamacare is destroying heath care & making it much more expensive! It put the IRS & the government in charge of your health care. Barry LIED when he said we can keep our doctor & that it would reduce costs.

Actually the idiots in Washington want a "single payer system" where the government is totally in charge of health care — socialized medicine. People in Canada & Europe used to come here if they could afford to because they had to wait so long for treatment in their socialized medicine program. Basically people are dieing because they have to wait.

Personally, I'm not as "valuable" under Obamacare because I'm in my 50s! When Sarah Palin talked about death panels, she was right!

I've been to several classes on Obamacare because I'm a tax preparer. The only consistence FACT is that no one knows what the hell is happening, starting in October!

Can anyone explain the Affordable Care Act to me?

I'm liberal on 99% of most issues, but Obamacare confuses me. I'm all for universal health care, but NOT free health care just for the poor. So what exactly is Obamacare, what was the thought behind it, and what are some reasons why I should be for or against it?

The only "free" health care is Medicaid which has been in effect for 45 years. There is an expansion of Medicaid under the ACA for states who want to take it. That enables someone who is single with less than $15K in income to qualify but you still have to meet other criteria.

This is not universal health plan, since it does not affect anyone who is already insured.

There are many parts to the ACA, from 2010 through 2018. The lynchpin of the plan is the 2014 insurance law making health insurance mandatory, not voluntary. There is a state insurance exchange which offers different benefit levels making it more affordable to buy insurance plus giving a tax credit which can be applied toward the premiums. It becomes affordable not only from a tax credit subsidy but the insurance itself. For example, no one can be charged more than $2000 in a deductible, your premiums wont exceed a percentage of your income and every level offers 10 basic benefits.

The objective is to get everyone insured so everyone has access to medical care. The function of the plan was to save the government millions they pay out for uninsured people who get treated at hospital ERs. If everyone is insured, the hospitals will not lose money, people will be able to see a doctor and not go to the ER, they wont have to file bankruptcy, they will take less time off from work.

Uninsured people create a major economic impact by seeking free care in the ER. Eventually the federal government has to compensate a percentage of the cost. The hospital has to raise the cost of other services and that results in higher insurance premiums.
