Great Horned Owl Embraces The Man That Rescued Her

?>

Owls are majestic, and sometimes mysterious, creatures. Photos of these nocturnal birds of preyare often nothing more than a pair of glowing yellow eyes peering out into the night.

They aren’t exactly the most affectionate of animals. In fact, that may be one of the last words I’d use to describe them. They’re independent, extremely adaptable birds with a broad wing span andheavily built, barrel-shaped bodies.

Their strong, independent characteristics make this story all the more interesting.

Although the eyes of a great horned owl are amongst the largest and most powerfully acute in the animal kingdom, many animals are no matchagainst man-made technology.

That’s how the story of GiGi, the beautiful great horned owl began. She was brought in to Mississippi’s Wild at Heart Rescue towards the end of May with serious head trauma, presumably after being hit by a car.

The staff did everything they could to save her, but one man would change her life forever.

Great horned owls are one of the most common types of owl found in the United States.GiGi, however, is no common bird.

She was brought to the Wild at Heart Rescue center in Mississippi with severe head trauma. To make matters worse, she was covered in parasites and had the bird equivalent to pneumonia.

Rescuers were unsure if she would survive. Especially after she lost an entire pound. Great horned owls typically weigh between 2-5 pounds so any weight loss is significant.

One man refused to give up on GiGi. Doug Pojeky, president of the rescue is also known as the “birds of prey whisperer.” No one is sure how, but he has always been able to bond with the birds like no one else can.

“In all my years of working with birds of prey, I have never seen someone with such a bond with these magnificent birds,” Missy Dubuisson, founder of Wild at Heart, told The Dodo.

Pojeky managed to nurse the weak bird back to health. She went from being hand fed to grabbing up food all on her own.

As you can see in this photo, GiGi was incredibly grateful to her rescuer. So grateful, shewrapped him up in her beautiful wings to say thank you.

The owl hugheld special meaning to Pojeky as well. Growing up, his father claimed a great horned owl always perched on their barn roof, but no one else in his family ever saw it.

However, the morning of Pojeky’s father’s death, he looked up and saw the owl overlooking the farm before flying off into the woods.

“For some reason when that bird was hugging me, all I could think of was my dad,” Pojeky explained.

This majestic bird and caring human have clearly brought comfort to one anotherand will continue to lean on each other until she is fully recovered and sent back into the wild.
